Island Bridge is a speculative proposal that explores the operative, performative and experiential potential of a bridge as inhabitable space. Capitalizing on the proximity and scale of the Taivalluoto sandbar, the project frames the shoreline as terrain for both pier and sub-marine design opportunities. The familiar material of the boardwalk and ubiquitous nature of the Finnish sauna balance the transformative affect of occupying a torquing ship hull. As architecture, landscape, and urbanism, the bridge not only catalyzes a new form of engagement with the environmental phenomena and dynamic ecologies of the Baltic Sea tides, but also renders a new urban beacon on Hietaniemi beach.
